A$AP Rocky talks up his Mob on ‘A$AP Forever’

The celebratory new single is the first taste from the rapper’s upcoming album.

Hip-hop sensation A$AP Rocky has released ‘A$AP Forever’, the first single from his forthcoming album (supposedly titled ‘TESTING’). The song is accompanied by a music video, which has currently amassed over 8 million views on YouTube.

The visually stunning video, directed by Dexter Navy, features footage of Rocky and his crew in various locations around New York, shifting from one shot to the next through a series of trippy transitions. The clip ends with Rocky falling through a black background, sporting uniform that displays numerous crash test symbols (no doubt in relation to the ‘TESTING’ caption found in the video’s description). The rapper wore the same outfit on his recent performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in which he performed the new single and the unreleased ‘Distorted Records’. ‘A$AP Forever’, for the most part, features an ethereal sample from Moby’s ‘Porcelain’ over some booming percussion. Lyrically, it’s a celebration of and a dedication to the A$AP Mob, the hip-hop collective from which Rocky adopted his stage name, warning on the hook not to “fuck with the gang”. Of course, he also pays tribute to the group’ founding member, A$AP Yams, who tragically passed away in 2015 at age 26. Rocky also has a lot of his own accomplishments to celebrate on this track as well, stating that he’s “done with adjusting to fame”. He mentions ‘VLONE’ (the designer streetwear brand he owns), how he put New York back ‘on the map’ in the hip-hop world, and his undeniably mammoth impact on the rap game.

Very few artists, let alone rappers, have seen the critical and commercial success, as well as the overall cultural impact Rocky has had this decade. Almost 3 years since his previous album, ‘AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP’, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, he is currently in the middle of another album cycle, having recently released the non-album single ‘Bad Company’ and several (supposedly) throw-away tracks on his SoundCloud. Recently, he’s released two successful albums with A$AP Mob (Cozy Tapes Vol. 1 and 2), launched the careers of numerous notable rappers, such as Playboi Carti, and went 3x U.S. Platinum after appearing on G-Eazy’s ‘No Limit’ with Cardi B. Needless to say, A$AP Rocky’s upcoming album has undeniable potential to be a game-changer.
