An Interview With Nōva

2015 has been a year of new artists, blossoming into the spotlight. One that’s sure to soon have fame is a young singer named NŌVA. At the bright age of 19, the Montreal-born songstress has released her debut single “More”, and boy, is it promising. It’s one of those songs that if listened to with headphones, is a euphoric experience. Her voice is transcendent, as is the thrilling production.
When her music was brought to my attention, I knew that I needed to know more – no pun intended. Okay, maybe just a little bit.

I did a short interview with her, and she gave me some insight into what we have to look forward to from her in the near future, as well as some interesting facts that let us get to know her a little better as a person.

Your debut single, “More”, has a prominently dark sound. Is that something that we’ll hear from your other songs?
When I wrote “More” I had a lot of things going on in my personal life, good and bad. I really like deep and dreamlike sounds. I’m not saying all my songs will be dark because I do write “happier” songs but I definitely do like going to a place where some people might feel uncomfortable, a dark place.

Q: Will More have a music video, and if so, what can we look forward to seeing?
I’m definitely looking to do a video for”More”. However, I’m writing a lot of songs and the EP is coming soon. I want to make an amazing video with what I feel is the best song. Right now the idea of a music video is really up in the air.

Q: Are there any plans for an album anytime soon?
Yes! Definitely.

Q: Where do you see yourself, career wise, in 5 years?
On stage still singing, still writing music. Doing what I love.

Q: Who are your biggest inspirations when it comes to your music?
I grew up listening to a lot of Lady Gaga. She really inspired me to not give care what people thinks and do what I love. BANKS is someone else I really look up to, artistic wise.

Q: What was the first album that you ever bought, and do you still listen to it today?
The first album I ever bought was the Lizzie McGuire Movie Soundtrack. I don’t listen to it anymore but Hilary Duff is amazing!

Q: Describe your music in three words.
Limitless, Dark, Ethereal

I’m excited to hear more from NŌVA. If she continues with singles with the strength of “More”, while also keeping that artistry with how she constructs her lyrics, I don’t see any reason why this young singer wouldn’t blow up in the mainstream. She hasn’t released any other music at the moment, but with this track, she’s got me wanting more and more.
