If you haven’t heard of Cheat Codes, we’re seriously wondering what rock you have been hiding under. They are literally one of the biggest rising trios in EDM music at the moment, having had hits all around the world and recently being propelled globally with their collaboration with Demi Lovato.
Their song, “No Promises”, has led to Cheat Codes performing on many TV shows including Good Morning America and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Not only that, but during the summer, they’ve been performing at various festivals around the world.
Let’s be honest, Cheat Codes are completely on form lately, and the band’s name is one everyone will know about – if they don’t already. The Los Angeles trio consist of Trevor Dahl, KEVI, and Matthew Russell.
It was a complete honour to be able to interview them for Outlet Magazine. They chatted about working with Demi Lovato, their success to date, and what they hope the future will bring.
Hey Cheat Codes, we hope you’ve been well. Thank you for answering our questions today. What have you been up to lately?
Just traveling and playing shows constantly! We’re gonna take some time off pretty soon to be in the studio so we’re looking forward to that!
You recently performed “No Promises” on Good Morning America, how was that?
Very rainy! Haha, it was pouring down rain, they thought they were gonna have to evacuate before we could do it live. Luckily there wasn’t any lightning until right after we finished so it all worked out! Always fun performing with Demi, she’s such a professional!
Speaking of Demi Lovato, what was it like working with her on the song?
It was amazing, we played a show with her in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and after that the Brazilian fans were hitting us both up on social media saying we should collaborate! We had the song “No Promises” and we knew it would be perfect for her! It only took her a couple hours in the studio to knock it out. She’s an amazing vocalist!
A music video for it has also been released, what was that like?
For the video, we were going for a post-apocalyptic vibe. The idea for the song is that there aren’t any guarantees in life, so we wanted the video to match that concept! We went to the desert and found some cool looking abandoned buildings to shoot in. We’re really happy with how it came out!
The stripped version has the same visuals, what do you make of that video?
Honestly, we just wanted to get another content piece out with a different version of the song. So many times, with EDM music, the focus is all on the drops and the electronic side of it, but the song on its own is so good so we wanted to do a different version that allowed the vocals to stand on their own!
How does it feel knowing that the song has been certified gold and platinum in various countries?
Feels great motherfucker yaaa!
You also performed the song on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, what was that like?
It was a really special moment for all of us, we grew up watching the tonight show with our families so being able to perform was surreal.
You also kick-started MTV’s Road To VMA’s with the song, how did that feel?
Felt great, the show was in LA and we sprayed thousands of dollars into the crowd 😉
Your most recently released single is a collaboration with Nicky Romero, titled “Sober”. How did that come about?
We’ve been in contact for a while now, but we both had some time to meet up in Vegas. We met up at the studio in the Wynn and knocked out the song! Our good friend, Skyler Stonestreet, sang on the record, we love writing with her!
Can you tell us more about the song?
We started developing the topline with our good friend, Skyler, and wanted to try a couple different options with the production, Nicky Reached about messing with the production and we love the version we were able to make together.
You’ve also collaborated recently with David Guetta and Robin Schulz, what was that like?
We were on tour when we were contacted about that song so Trevor actually flew back to LA mid tour just to record the vocals, but we’re so glad we did, we love that song so much! We’ve been good friends with Robin Schulz for a while so it was nice to collab with him on this!
Your biggest single internationally is “Sex” with Kris Kross Amsterdam. How did it feel when it started gaining success all over the world?
It was surreal, that was the first song that took us around the world. I remember we performed on our first late night television show because of the song, in Amsterdam, and it’s always surprising when people from other countries that speak different languages know every word to your songs.
So far, you’ve released a lot of singles, is there any plans to release an album?
We’ve been working on it, stay tuned!
Over the summer, you’ve been performing at festivals, which ones have been your favourite to perform at and why?
Matt: Lollapalooza was our favorite to date! I’m from St. Louis so I had my little brother come out and see us and the crowd was insane!
You have more gigs lined up, what should people expect from your sets?
Our sets are unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Every show we spray thousands of dollars into the crowd so you might get rich if you’re in the front row. Some of our fans wear ponchos and bring money nets. Also, it’s very different than a typical DJ set because all 3 of us sing as well, and we do it at different moments in the set. It really keeps you guessing.
The Cheat Codes Party Playlist on Spotify is followed by over 11,000 people, can you tell us more about this playlist?
Probably the most comprehensive party playlist on Spotify.
You launched “Too Easy” on your YouTube Channel, where every Friday people can tune in to watch the life of Cheat Codes. What’s it like filming these videos?
It’s just us being honest; our lives as a movie.
You are based in LA, what are your favourite things to do when you’re not working?
Hit the clubs, eat veggie grill, and watch Game of Thrones.
Which venues are your favourite in LA and why?
We love the shrine, Exchange and USC fraternities haha
Do you have specific inspirational spots when it comes to song writing?
Yes, we love to write when the moon is full and the LA smog has lifted over the Hollywood hills.
Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
We have a hit song coming out in 2019 featuring Elton John and Drake. We just haven’t written it yet. And Elton and Drake don’t know about it, but just wait.
Are there any more remixes coming up that you can exclusively reveal to Outlet Magazine?
We’re taking a break on remixes to focus on originals!
What’s next for Cheat Codes?
The world 😉
And, finally, is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
Yes, there are life hacks and cheat codes to anything you want in life. Don’t take anything seriously because none of this is real. Entertainment is fake, everything you see, hear, taste, and touch is all a figment of your imagination. Things only have meaning because we give them meaning so if you’re having a hard time, just remember that none of it matters and it’s possible to make your life a game if you so choose.
What a way to end this interview, thank you Cheat Codes for you time and for answering our questions. We’re especially grateful for your inspiring words which are exactly what a lot of people in the world need to hear right now, not just your fans.
If that last answer didn’t make you a fan of Cheat Codes and you’ve read the whole interview and listened to their music and you’re still not their fan, then you’re welcome to crawl back under that rock, because this talented trio have already blasted onto the music scene and they certainly will continue to rise. Watch out for Cheat Codes in the near future.
We highly suggest that you check out their Spotify Artist page. “No Promises” has charted globally already, but they’ve recently released the stripped version, which you can download and stream now. They are gearing up to release an album, so as we all wait, let’s keep playing their music.
