Still riding the waves of success generated by her hit single ‘New Rules’, Dua Lipa has shared a video for ‘IDGAF’, conceptualized by Mosaert (Paul Van Haver aka Stromae and Luc Junior Tam) and directed by Henry Schofield. The track is the latest single from her widely celebrated debut album from last year.
The video depicts two sides (quite literally) of Dua Lipa’s personality, with a cold, steadfast version of the singer dancing and singing alongside an embodiment of her softer, more reserved side. The two are backed up by a team of dancers, who have also been duplicated (or dua-plicated) and don the same coloured outfits as the two Lipa’s.
In regards to the gestation of the video, Scholfield stated “we wanted to embody the sense of empowerment in the track, whilst going beyond the literal breakup context. So we had in mind a visual of the internal struggle, showing the two sides of Dua’s emotive state, like an argument with someone you love. The strong Dua at first berating then eventually persuading her weaker alter ego that they both don’t give a fuck.”
Dua herself shared some insight into the process behind the video, saying “so excited to finally share this video with everyone. It took us 22 hours to shoot this video and with the best people and team magic happens. This video is about your stronger and weaker side fighting with each other only to realise that self-love is what will help you overcome any negativity that comes your way. I hope you like it as much as we have loved making it.”
Almost everyone seems to have fallen in love with Dua Lipa over the last year, with ‘New Rules’ recently going double platinum in the U.S., as well as reaching #4 on the Top 40 chart. The song also featured on a countless number of publications’ year-end lists, with TIME naming it their #1 song of the year.
The immense hype surrounding the singer will only continue to amass from here, with ‘IDGAF’ having already amassed over 45 million Spotify steams. Dua Lipa will embark on a sold-out headlining tour of the U.S. early next month.
