G Flip Proves She’s Not a One Hit Wonder With ‘Killing My Time’

Georgia Flipo, aka G Flip, burst onto the scene one day in mid-February, causing a stir with her debut single ‘About You’. Since then, she’s truly made her mark on the Australian and international music scenes. She played her first ever shows as G Flip at SXSW, was named Best New Music by Pitchfork, sold out a national tour, and has been the topic of multiple think-pieces. But don’t be fooled by her seemingly sudden breakthrough – the 24-year-old has been playing drums for over 10 years, including as the touring drummer for Melbourne band EMPRA, and spent a year teaching herself to produce in her bedroom. Her latest single ‘Killing My Time’ is a huge bop, and it confirms that she’s got way more to give us.

‘Killing My Time’ is catchy right from the beginning. It’s got a simple beat that wriggles its way into your head, and the lyrics flow in such a way that you can’t avoid singing along. While maybe not everyone can relate to the exact story of the song, it’s a situation many people would be familiar with. Flipo says “the lyrics revolve around a girl I was seeing, who kept distracting me from making music…it was hard to escape and be productive so I inevitably I ended up breaking up with her because I wanted to focus…she was ‘Killing My Time.’”

This track showcases some of Flipo’s skills that we hadn’t seen on ‘About You’ – the production is a lot tighter, and the sound overall is a lot lighter. It’s one of those rare follow-up tunes that might actually be better than the breakthrough. It nearly wasn’t to be, though, as Flipo told Triple J that she “wasn’t planning on releasing this song as the next single” but “it’s literally all [her] friends’ favourite song”. It was also a crowd favourite on her recent run of shows, despite very few people having heard it before. While it might not have been her first choice, it was a smart one. Not all musicians who are thrown into the hype machine the way G Flip has can make it through, but with ‘Killing My Time’ she’s proven that she’s got what it takes to make it as the next big thing.
