Lisa King’s ‘Riot of Orchids’ at NO VACANCY QV

Adelaide-based artist Lisa King has crossed state lines to bring her new exhibition Riot of Orchids to NO VACANCY Gallery QV, in Melbourne. King got her beginnings in graphic design, but moved into the more creative world of illustration and mural work in 2012. A self-taught talent, she creates imaginative mixed media artworks.

King works over multiple mediums – everything from oils and acrylics, to charcoal and digital – and with her natural gravitation towards fashion, faces, and romance, her culture-driven and pop-influenced work is as easy on the eye as it is to fall for.

She is also the talented hand behind several large-scale murals, including the Memphis-inspired frontage of the Jive in Adelaide, and a recent tribute to the late David Bowie.

Riot of Orchids – King’s first solo show – was created out of a period of 6 months studio exploration. A body of figurative works derived from fashion and pop culture, King’s work in portraiture is gentle but striking. The faces gazing out from her works are thoughtful; doe-eyed, but not without an alluring air of mystique.

The collection of new works contains a mixture of large scale oil paintings and fashion illustrations. Inspired by the ‘80s, Riot of Orchids has a nostalgic spirit which is matched by the space’s world of unusual and unconventional movement, and pink retro surrounds.
