‘Restless’ without Louis Berry

Our favourite rock ‘n’ roll rebel, Louis Berry has blessed our ears once again with his soul-stirring classic, ‘Restless’. With hefty applause from tastemaker heavyweights Radio 1, Annie Mac and NME, Berry has been noted over the past year for his romping rock anthems. However, upon first listen to his latest release, it appears that this rocking maestro has indeed embraced a mellower side of his vigorous character.

Unlike his others, ‘Restless’ switches lanes from a rock and blue infused romper to a folky guitar-driven number. Opening with a delicate pluck of strings and rasped vocals tugged with longing, we are veered into a ‘restless’ and wistful musical landscape, a contrary to any of Berry’s usual raw-edged classics. Where’s the searing growl of the band? Where’s the fiery tongue and murderous vocals?

Then one minute in, it hits. A dust of Berry’s trademark firebrand sizzle suddenly peeks through and we are spiraled into a belting guitar solo trailed with endearingly gutsy vocals. ‘Don’t you know that I’m just restless baby, without you’ Berry serenades as acoustics with a Mumford & Sons air are accompanied by a background wail of electric guitars – a combination worthy of endless foot tapping.

The up-tempo gem is certainly a breath of fresh air from Berry and another flavoursome taste from his debut LP set for release next year.
