Single Review: Hozier – Better Love

When the video for his debut single, Take Me to Church went viral a couple of years ago, Irish singer-songwriter, Hozier became a star almost overnight. Music lovers rallied to support the 26-year-old whose aforementioned number one hit would be nominated for Song of the Year at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards last year, and he now enjoys an international fan base numbering in the millions.

The singer first became popular for his poignant lyrics and subtle ability to shine a light on important social issues such as gay rights and domestic violence. Now taking on Hollywood, his latest single, Better Love will be included in the soundtrack to the highly anticipated feature film, The Legend of Tarzan.

Starting out with piano and drums, the song builds quickly as it weaves a spell around listeners’ hearts as those honeyed vocals kick in with Hozier singing, “I once kneeled in a shaking thrill/I chase the memory of it still, of every chill.”

The song was written specifically for The Legend of Tarzan and has all those trademark features we have come to know and love in a classic Hozier song. Digging deep into the overall theme of the quintessential “Tarzan and Jane love story”, at its heart it’s a romantic ballad and will no doubt rocket up the charts not only for its inclusion in the film but overall radio appeal. It is a song that I, like many of this artist’s fans could listen to over and over without getting bored. A remarkable track to tell a fascinating tale.
