After garnering substantial critical and commercial appraisal in 2017 (including earning a spot on Rolling Stone’s 10 Best Songs of 2017 and missing out on Triple J’s Hottest 100 by just two places), Australian singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly has announced that she has signed an international (ex AUS/NZ) record deal with high-profile US independent label Secretly Canadian.
Donnelly states: “I am so excited and grateful to be joining the Secretly Canadian family! I’m very grateful to be working with the people who, in turn, work with some of my favourite artists in the world and I know that Secretly Canadian is a nurturing space to write music and grow as an artist.”
“Stella was one of the artists I was most excited about seeing at Bigsound last fall,” co-founder and co-owner Ben Swanson says. “Her live show was stunning. With her clever, yet direct lyrics, Stella’s work is threaded with a rare mix of wit and emotion. I couldn’t be more honored to be working with Stella and cannot wait to hear what she unleashes on the world next.” Other acts included on the Secretly Canadian roster include The War on Drugs, Yoko Ono and fellow Aussie artists Alex Cameron and Ben Abraham.
Along with this announcement, Stella has shared the music video for ‘Mechanical Bull’, a track included on her 2017 EP ‘Thrush Metal’, which is seeing an international re-release in June. Directed by Charlotte Evans, and filmed in New Zealand at a rockabilly diner, the video is a quirky, absurdist take on objectification that goes hand-in-hand with the sharp-witted humour Donnelly channels in her music. Donnelly explained that the song “is dedicated to people who work in hospitality who have to deal with customers, especially drunk ones, harassing them and making objectifying comments. I wrote this about my experience working in bars and it was a nice way to release some of the frustration I had!”
Stella will be performing at SXSW next month and embark on her first US tour. Following this, she’ll be returning home to play a co-headline tour with fellow Aussie indie darling Alex the Astronaut, before heading off to Europe for a string of shows in May.
Australian and New Zealand fans can pre-order a limited 12” white vinyl version of ‘Thrush Metal’, which includes a new bonus track ‘Talking’, out June 22.
