Edward RussellThe Sam of all trades, master of none. This well known saying (although slightly adjusted) seems rather spot on when it comes to explaining who I am and what I do. I’ve ran for Cheshire in Cross Country, thrown for the County in Javelin and been a high level gymnast since I was 6. Then I move onto my adult life where I’m a pretty good sales manager, run all of the social media channels, dabble into the world of accounts every now and then and of course, the odd blog or two. I’m almost sure I’ve thought about being a paramedic, vet, web designer and – sod it – why not throw in the potential chance of being a plasterer?!
I used to be pretty awesome at doing flips and shit, you know, somersaults and handstands? Then I went and snapped my achilles which not only is one of the most painful injuries you can treat yourself to but it’s a bugger to recover from. It also leaves you with a skinny leg that looks like it’s been purposely starved from any kind of exercise. So I had a big plan for this year which was to grit my teeth, work hard on those boring physio exercises and get back to being awesome again so I could kick ass until I reached the National Team (Team GB)…that didn’t happen. The not-so-big leg just couldn’t hack it in time and a week before the competition, it bailed on me.
Before you get all sleepy on me I would like to point out that I really do have a point to telling you what seems to be quite a negative sounding blog but I WILL get to it. So after nearly two decades of being ‘Sam the Gymnast’, I’m now finding myself saying ‘I used to do this and used to do that’ way too often than not and thanks to the man friend (not a boyfriend in my eyes due to him being an adult) I’ve realised it’s something that needs working on.
What is the purpose of my blog you say? Now I’m officially an ex-gymnast I have come to the realisation that I have mostly spent my life either in a gym, an office or taking pictures of my beloved cats and it seems I have no bloody clue what to do next. What you’re not about to hear is that I’m going to drop everything I know, live with nothing but a backpack and to travel the world with the possibility of meeting cool people or Gary the Goat. Don’t get me wrong it’s a splendid idea but I don’t believe it’s the only way to ‘find yourself’.
So, ‘Sam’s Blog’, ‘Exploring with McGowan’ or some other cheesy name for my regular writing will hopefully give both myself and you other potential explorers a reasonable and affordable way of enjoying what the World gave us. Before you go and get all negative, this isn’t me saying this is what you do if you’re a little less outgoing or spontaneous. This blog may just be useful for those who have a job that they actually don’t want to leave, a partner they actually like or a pet cat that just can’t live without them.
Now I’ve mentioned my name several times and you have a rough idea of why I’m writing about my goings on, I believe that’s enough about me for now. I have to be careful that this blog doesn’t consist entirely of me talking about myself as I personally think it’s a sure fire way of people thinking you’re a bit of a nob. And on that note, I will leave you in peace to mull over whether you think my next blog will be worth your time. Maybe you can think of me as your charity case, the underdog of lifestyle blogs or simply just a good laugh. I will allow you to judge me on your own terms.
