The solo career of The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has emerged as a beaming ray of indie-rock light.
His latest album, Francis Trouble, is clean, crisp and unpretentious, yet unafraid to bear resemblance to Hammond’s day job. Unveiling the video for the album’s second single, Far Away Truths, Hammond Jr. confidently struts through a montage of vibrant, mesmerizing shadows and kaleidoscopic silhouettes.
The video was directed by Hammond Jr.’s wife, Justyna, with visuals created by lighting designer Tobias Rylander. “I was lucky to work with my wife, Justyna, directing and the legend Tobias Rylander creating visuals that echo the Francis Trouble album art,” Hammond Jr. said.
Francis Trouble has been Hammond Jr.’s first solo venture since 2015’s Momentary Masters. For an album inspired by the stillborn death of his twin brother, Francis, and the lingering effects that event has had on his life and music, it’s remarkably affable and upbeat.“What the music says may be serious, but as a medium it should not be questioned, analyzed or taken too seriously. I think it should be tarted up, made into a character, a parody of itself,” Hammond Jr. said.
Hammond Jr. will spend the next month touring the US and Europe before arriving on Australian shores for two headline shows (in Melbourne and Sydney) where he’ll be joined by Sydney duo Clews. He’s also set to perform at the sold out Splendour in the Grass festival in Byron Bay.
Francis Trouble is available now on iTunes and Spotify.
