On his new single Feels Like Home, Mike Waters sounds like Vance Joy minus the depressing overtones. It’s full of light and airy marching band accompaniment for that irrepressible voice. Cheerful songs like this are too often brushed aside as nothing more than fillers for advertisements about Kangaroo Island. Well, today I’m taking a stand for happy music by stating that Mike Waters has produced a beautifully crafted song that truly does feel like home.
According to Waters himself, the inspiration for this track came from the ardour of house hunting mixed in with a trip to Splendour In The Grass. His own festival experiences apparently led him to an existential moment that revealed to him the beauty of music as a shared human experience. I tip my hat to Mike for being able to do what few can – translate that notion into notes and chords.
The video is a natural extension of the festivals theme. Working with filmmakers Max Rawicz and Jam Nawaz, Mike has produced an aesthetically beautiful film featuring hundreds of his fan’s real life festival photos that really does provide a harmonious backdrop to the uplifting sound of Feels Like Home.
Exploring the concept of home is a noble pursuit for a songwriter and through the combination of joy filled melody and vulnerable lyrics, Waters has provided us with a wonderful work of art.
